Stop Primate Testing at UMass Amherst
Here is some info about primate experimentation at UMass Amherst and what is being done to stop it!

    Taken from the website- www.endtestingnow.blogspot.com

URGENT: UMass Amherst Supports Primate Experimentation
    UMass Amherst supports primate torture.

We are a group of concerned citizens working to end the primate
experimentationat UMass Amherst who are looking for your help
    with our campaign.

Why End Primate Testing at UMass Amherst?

Ethically: Primates are biologically very close to humans,
which makes them supposedly valuable for research. However
this also means primates are able to suffer and feel pain just
as humans do. It is immoral to inflict such pain and suffering
    on these sentient animals.

Economically/Practicality: Hundreds of thousands of dollars (if
not more), valuable time, and resources that could otherwise be spent
bettering our communities and schools are wasted every year on
primate testing at UMass Amherst alone.

    Scientifically: Animal-modeled biomedical research yields
results that cannot be safely applied to humans. It diverts
research funding that should instead be going to proven methods
    of curing human disease.

Legally: There is potentential that the way animals at UMass
Amherst facilities have been treated violates the Animal Welfare
Act. This is where we can use your help. If you or someone you
know has observed the mistreatment of primates at UMASS Amherst
labs, please share this knowledge with us. Any information or
evidence you have could be crucial to ending the torture.

Call our anonymous hotline at (413)548-5803 or email us at
EndTestingNow@gmail.com to report instances of animal abuse at
UMass Amherst or to get involved.

    Information to Include in Report:

    * Complainant’s name (optional)
    * The nature of the concern(s)
    * Description of the event or charge (including dates of observation) of the alleged violation(s)
    * Copies of any written, photographic, or taped documentation to substantiate the complaint
    * Names of other contacts who may corroborate the complainant’s concerns

If you are wondering if something you have seen being done to an animal is animal abuse, check to see if it is something on this list, or very similar to something on this list. If the incident you are talking about happened at UMASS Amherst call the number below: Call our anonymous hotline at (413)548-5803 or email us at
EndTestingNow@gmail.com to report instances of animal abuse at

UMass Amherst or to get involved If you have seen animal abuse in some other circumstance please call your local animal control officer, or shelter. Also, PETA has a phone number and email address that you can report abuses to animals in labs. Their hotline number is 757 962 8383 and email is whistleblower@peta.org What is Animal Abuse?

Animal Abuse can include any of the following possible violations:

    * People hitting, screaming at, or otherwise abusing animals
    * Animals who are sick, emaciated, bloody or otherwise obviously ill and injured and not receiving veterinary care
    * Animals showing signs of cage stress — such as self-mutilation — caused by deprivation
    * Animals caged in a manner that causes them to become aggressiveand attack one another
    * Animals confined to filthy or dangerous cages (broken wires, etc.)
    * Animals given insufficient pain relief during painful procedures or insufficient post-trauma or post-surgery pain relief
    * Animals denied sufficient food or water
    * Animals killed in painful ways (e.g. mice having their heads cut off with scissors, live animals being placed in freezers)
    * Primates given insufficiently varied diets or kept in barren cages
    * Animals marked for identification in cruel was (e.g. by amputation of toes)

Here is a little bit of information about some of the primate tests going on at UMass Amherst and the people behind them…

One example is the work of Professor Melinda Novak (UMass Amherst Psychology Department Chair) who is currently well into a 14 year research project investigating Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB) in primates. To do so, she is exposing primates to stressful environments which result in primates committing acts of self mutilation though
biting and other such activity. Ask Melinda Novak to end her 14 year primate experiment early! As of this year, the grant for her SIB research passed $4.5 million. Think of what this $4.5 million could have otherwise been spent on! What has her research produced to date? We now know that primates who have been subjected to conditions that would never occur in nature and which we would not allow to be applied to prisoners because of the level of cruelty it invokes. This research does not make us more knowledgeable; it makes us more savage. (http://euryale.sbs.umass.edu/PsychWeb/People/MiniWebPages/novak.html).

Jerrold Meyer, another UMass researcher is not only collaborating with Melinda Novak on researching Self-Injurious Behavior in primates, but he is working with Researcher Craig Ferris (UMass Medical School,Worcester) on a similarly unproductive study. Their project includes exposing primates to long term chronic use of MDMA, more commonly known as ecstasy. If the objective of the research were to determine whether it is safe for Primates to drop ecstasy when they are clubbing, the research might easier for these scientists to justify. We already know that ecstasy and related drugs are harmful to humans and the research is not necessary to our further understanding of this socio-scientific issue. Accordingly, I demand that Jerrold Meyer sever his ties to the cruel and unnecessary experiments he is currently undertaking. Each year, Jerrold Meyer and his colleagues receive over $554,000 for their research on addicting primates to ecstasy. (http://euryale.sbs.umass.edu/PsychWeb/People/MiniWebPages/meyer.html).

Div 3 and other goings ons
So i forgot my livejournal password and was too lazy to change it for a while and didn't post.
I passed Div 2 and had my Div 3 contract signed.
I'm studying contemporary radical activism in RIchmond, Virginia, which means I'm studying a lot about Food Not Bombs, which is cool
I might be a little in over my head, but mostly cause I've been hanging out too much lately. Get on the ball, self
I finally got promoted to Super-B on the EMT squad and I'm super pysched and I signed up for an online EMT refresher course and an 8 hour con-ed so I can stay certified.
    My mod is really nice,
my garbage house friends are good cuddle buddies, but I wish cuddling were more frequent in my life.
    I miss Micah
    I miss Richmond
I love the band the Riot Before, probably because a) they are from Richmond and talk to me about it and have played at Hampshire 2 times this semester, reminding me of home and b) the bassist is wicked cute (but has a gf , alas)
I'm skipping family xmas and spending Dec 18- Jan 7 in New Orleans, hopefully at Wiley's house even tho she won't be there. I'm hopin Tim and Janick and Johno will be my buddy pals
I should do my homework now, but will probably watch the online version of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice and drink chocolate-bannana soy milk (my new fav)
I woke up with a fever of 100.3 yesterday but through water and will power was rid of it by late last night, so I could hang out with the bands
I finally relocated the Hampshire Zine Collective out of a filing cabinet and into a good display
I get jealous but I try not to. I'll try harder.
I'm helping organize an animal liberation conference on campus, and it is trickkkky.
I'm really busy despite only taking 2 courses.
I'm might hop a train this week to go to Boston to see Defiance Ohio and then also see them in Brattelboro. Depends on how irresponsible I am feeling.

    Mo’s Zine Distro

    Approaching Apocalypse Distro

The Approaching Apocalypse Distro is an independent zine distributor working out of Amherst, Massachusetts and Richmond, Virginia. We publish and distribute DIY zines and other products (patches, buttons, etc.) that inspire and inform. The purpose of this project is to help disseminate ‘propaganda’, connect people around the world, and make the zine community more accessible to people everywhere. Information, art, music, ideas and stories were meant to be shared and the Approaching Apocalypse Distro will do what it can to share them by selling most items at reasonable prices or at cost (or less).

The name Approaching Apocalypse is not reflective of a gloom and doom attitude about a fiasco of biblical proportions, but rather of an understanding that the world is a mess, and will likely only get messier (hopefully not actually end-of-the-world type messy). Reading and learning and writing and creating and loving are all ways that we can ‘prepare’ for what is to come. Approaching Apocalypse is also about living out our beliefs as anarchists- finding ways to be a positive influence and remain true to our anarchist ideals. We can not (and don’t want to) count on the government, corporations or any other organization to take care of us. It is up to all of us to find ways to contribute to our communities. Autonomy and community will be the keys to making the world better, not worse. As Rising Tide North America puts it when discussing climate change and the mess the world is in, “Practical solutions exist; it’s time we start using them and making them more widely accessible. We must dismantle the systems of oppression that permeate our culture and ourselves, and work toward real solidarity across lines of race, class, gender and sexual orientation. When we begin to build a culture of mutual aid and community autonomy, we demonstrate that we don’t need the government, and certainly not giant corporations, to survive. We just need a livable planet.”. (www.risingtidenorthamerica.org). Lofty goals to work towards, but that is what makes us idealists.

When some of my friends at Hampshire and I had the (completely informal and mostly unrealized) Apocalypse club, or just ran around talking about the apocalypse, it was with an energizing feeling. It helped us gain the momentum needed to make hot pants out of a sweater (etc.). I am pysched about projects and friends and community- and yelling ‘for the apocalypse’ helps get me even more excited. Like how excited I am about a zine distro.

The zines published by the Approaching Apocalypse distro have a focus on political and social justice issues (animal liberation, straight edge, vegan, social movements, environmental and sustainability issues, anarchism, etc.) as well as DIY how to subjects, punk, art, travel and personal zines. We welcome any submissions along these lines, and probably most other well-done zines. Contact us if you want to be distributed by Approaching Apocalypse, we are always looking for more titles.

Certain books may also be distributed by Approaching Apocalypse, if they seem relevant to the previous mentioned topics. Hopefully a vast array of awesome things, such as t-shirts, patches, buttons, tapes, and CDs will become available as Approaching Apocalypse grows. Vegan snacks are a future attendee of tabling events.

Approaching Apocalypse will operate mainly through the postal service, tabling at shows and conferences, and a website in the near future.

    spring
This semester is pretty great, hence the lack of angsty livejournal posts. I've been so happy I haven't been doing quite as much school work as I ought to. But lots of good things have been happening. I've been mostly positive. New Orleans fro spring break and an amazing squat and hot kids and awesomeness....free beignets, and 10 dollars cause I looked like a sad puppy. And last night there was bluegrass at the Redbarn that was great. And open relationship with Josh, I can't do monogamy. And I asked a boy to coffee this weekend and he says he doesn't have time which is a little suck, but I dressed up all hot and rednecky for the bluegrass. I just wish it was warm enough for daisy dukes everyday.
I've been writing a lot of letters lately to people in Prison and other people. I wish I got more letters back though.
I have a lot to do and not so much time to do it in. I need cuddling perhaps.
I've been writing stuff at http://anarchymo.wordpress.com or some address similar to that. tis my new blog

I can't wait for it to be warm out

    8:12 pm
SO I am not doing so well on my independent study.... I still have a lot of reading and writing to do, and 1 week to do it in.
I spent Tuesday Night through Wednesday night riding trains with Josh, who might just be my new favorite person, no offefnse to any other persons I know...and now I can't settle down to do work. It was cold as fuck, but I smiled a lot...and I don't know how I feel about the future now.
I will try to get my ass in gear though...It has been an interesting break/Jan term...not entirely productive but not unproductive either.
I am kinda wondering if when I get back I'll discover any of my stuff is missing from the break in at the beginning of January.
I did secure a job this summer as a counselour at a Rock Climbing camp..so that should be awesome.
I miss my mod and Hampshire. but I don't know how much I am gonna enjoy the spring...cause I might just wish I was traveling around. We shall seeeeee.

But I also got the ball rolling on becoming a piercer...that could be good...I need one more catalog to come so I can get all the supplies I need to start gathering a portfolio.
Oh yea, in case I didn't mention- the diner where I usually work got shut down...so I did not really make any money this break..mostly made enough to not go too far in debt. Which sucks HARRRD. I miss the diner.

will it all turn out badly just because i am currently more interested in a committed relationship than sihf is? or might it work out in the long run. I have a reasonable plan for all of this, and I am actually ok with it...I can handle waiting, and I believe that if it is meant to be it will happen despite a few setbacks, and regardless I want sihf as a friend

but right now I need a warm body, reassurance that someone gives a shit
    12:01 am
I really reall want to be held, but not in the friendly way, and not in the someone is interested inme but I'm not in them way either. i want someone I like who gives a shit to cuddle with me. I want to be with Sihf, but I don't think it makes sense to wait for him to want me?? and i need something now, I can't concentrate on my homework

    6:48 pm
    AHHH
So everything was going well until Sihf basically broke up with me over email today. shitty. And his message was confusing so I'm not sure if he wants to just slow down or like take things back a step and start over or if he honestly wants to be friends or if he doesnt want to see me again. I just really want someone, and apparently now I cant have someone.
and the one time when I want commitment, have been monogamous, and haven't wanted out of the relationship cause I thought the other person was annoying, it blows up in my face.
from now on i break hearts
but i dont even feel like being with anyone else right now but sihf
hopefully he and i can work this out.
but he says he does not want to be committed with a long term relationship. and i do.
    but noone does with me
    shitty
    shitty
homework also is eating my face
but now my face is sad
i need to cuddle, but onyl with sihf
i'm gonna punch him when i see him, then make him hug me
